How Vidarbha Businesses Can Get Found on Google Maps?

By Mahesh Vyas
13 min read

When someone in Sitabuldi, Rajkamal Chowk or Tilak Road searches for what you sell, Google shows three businesses on a map. Here is how shops and firms across Vidarbha get into those three, step by step.

Somebody standing near Rajkamal Chowk in Amravati types medical store near me into their phone. Somebody in Sitabuldi searches for a coaching class for NEET. A buyer driving through Akola looks up dal mill. In every one of those searches, Google shows a small map with three businesses sitting above everything else.

Those three get the calls, the direction requests and most of the walk ins. Everyone below them is competing for scraps.

Here is the part that should interest you. Across much of Vidarbha, most shops and firms have never properly set up their Google listing. Plenty have no listing at all. Some have one that a customer created years ago, with the wrong phone number and a pin dropped two streets away. In towns like Paratwada, Akot and Wardha, the competition for those three spots is still thin, which means a business that does this properly today can take a position that will cost far more to win in three years.

This guide walks through exactly how to do it, in the order that matters, with the local problems that are specific to how addresses and businesses work here.

How Google Decides Who Shows Up

Google has said openly that local results depend on three things.

Relevance. How well your listing matches what the person searched for. This comes from your business category, your description, your services and your reviews.

Distance. How far you are from the person searching, or from the place they mentioned in the search. You cannot change this, so do not waste energy on it.

Prominence. How well known and trusted your business appears. This comes from reviews, ratings, photos, how complete your listing is, and whether the rest of the internet agrees about who and where you are.

You control two of the three completely. Everything below is about relevance and prominence.

Step 1: Find Out Whether You Already Exist on Maps

Before creating anything, open Google Maps and search for your business name and your town. Try your name in English and the way people might spell it in Marathi.

A lot of Vidarbha businesses discover a listing they never made. Google creates some automatically, and customers can suggest places too. If one exists, claim it rather than making a new one. Two listings for the same shop split your reviews, confuse Google, and can get both of them suppressed.

If you find a listing with your name but somebody else controls it, for example a former employee or an agency you no longer work with, you can request ownership through Google. It takes a little patience, but it is far better than starting over.

Step 2: Claim or Create Your Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is the free tool that controls your appearance on Maps and in local search. You can start from the Google Business Profile website or simply by searching your business name on Google while signed in and choosing the option to manage or claim it.

The most important decision here is your business name, and this is where many people go wrong.

Use your real name, exactly as it appears on your signboard. Nothing extra. If your board says Shree Ganesh Traders, your listing says Shree Ganesh Traders.

It is tempting to write Shree Ganesh Traders Best Cotton Supplier Akola, hoping the extra words help you rank. They might, briefly. Then a competitor reports it, or Google catches it, and the listing gets suspended. Adding keywords or locations that are not part of your actual name breaks Google’s guidelines, and it is one of the most common reasons listings disappear.

Step 3: Put the Pin Exactly Where Your Door Is

This step matters more in Vidarbha than in most of the guides you will read online, because of how addresses work here.

Plenty of real addresses in our towns look like this: near Hanuman Mandir, behind the old bus stand, opposite the SBI branch. A customer who knows the area understands that perfectly. Google Maps often does not, and it guesses. The guess can land your pin on the wrong street entirely.

So write your address as fully as you can, including the landmark in the address line, and then drag the map pin to the exact spot of your entrance. Not the building. The entrance, the door a customer actually walks through.

Then check it properly. Stand outside your shop with your phone, open your listing and ask for directions to it. If the route takes you round the back, or to the wrong gate of a complex, move the pin. For businesses inside a MIDC area such as Hingna, Butibori or Akola MIDC, where many units share one main road, this single check can be the difference between a buyer arriving and a buyer calling you lost.

Google Maps also gives every location a Plus Code, a short code that points to an exact spot even where there is no formal street address. Adding it to your website and your WhatsApp messages gives customers a precise way to find you.

Step 4: Get Verified

Google needs to confirm that your business is real and that you are the one managing it. It decides which verification method to offer you. These days that is often a short video recording, and sometimes a phone call, text message or email.

If you get the video option, prepare before you press record. Google generally wants to see three things in one continuous recording: where you are, such as the street and nearby shops or landmarks, that the business is real, such as your permanent signboard and your products, stock or equipment, and that you manage it, such as opening the shutter, entering the counter area or showing business documents.

The most common reason verification fails here is signage. A temporary banner, a painted name that has faded, or no board at all makes it hard for Google to believe the business is permanent. If your signboard is weak, fix that first.

If You Work From Home or Travel to Customers

Electricians, plumbers, tutors who visit homes, photographers, contractors, transport operators and many consultants do not have a shop customers visit. You can still be listed as a service area business. You hide your home address and instead list the towns and areas you serve.

This works well across Vidarbha, where a single business often covers a whole taluka. A contractor based in Yavatmal can list Wani, Pusad and Darwha. A transporter near Wardha can list Pulgaon, Hinganghat and Arvi. Be honest about the areas you really serve, because Google is increasingly strict about listings that claim a wide area they cannot back up.

Step 5: Choose the Right Category

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals you have. It tells Google what you are, and it decides which searches you are even considered for.

Choose the most specific category Google offers that truly describes your main business. A broad category puts you in competition with everything, and a specific one puts you in front of the exact people looking for you. Then add secondary categories only for things you genuinely do, not for things you wish you did.

A quick way to check your choice: search on Maps for your type of business in your city, open the top competitors and look at the category shown under their name. If most of the businesses that rank use a particular category, that tells you something useful.

Step 6: Fill In Every Field, Honestly

A half empty listing looks like a half serious business, both to customers and to Google.

Opening hours. Set them accurately, and use special hours for festival closures. If you close for Diwali or Ganesh Chaturthi and your listing says open, somebody drives across town to a locked shutter and leaves a one star review. Special hours prevent that entirely.

Phone number. Use a number that somebody actually answers during working hours. An unanswered call from Maps is a customer lost to the next listing.

Website. Link it if you have one. A real website behind the listing is a strong signal, and we cover why below.

Services and products. List what you actually sell, with prices where it makes sense. A customer who can see that you stock the specific item or offer the specific service is far more likely to call.

Description. Write it the way you would explain your business to a customer at the counter. What you do, who you serve, which areas you cover, how long you have been running. Many of your customers search in Marathi or in Marathi typed in English letters, so use the plain words they use, not marketing language.

Step 7: Add Real Photographs, and Keep Adding Them

Listings with good photos get noticeably more attention, and in our towns photos do an extra job: they help people actually find you.

Start with the one most businesses forget, which is your storefront photographed from the road, the way a customer approaching on a bike would see it. When the address says behind the old bus stand, that picture of your signboard is how somebody knows they have arrived.

Then add the inside of your shop or office, your products, your team at work, and for service businesses, finished jobs. Photograph them in daylight on a real phone. No stock images. Customers here recognise a fake photo instantly, and it quietly costs you trust.

Add a few new photos every month. A listing that keeps changing looks like a business that is alive.

Step 8: Ask for Reviews the Right Way

Reviews are the single biggest prominence signal most local businesses can influence, and most have far fewer than they have earned, simply because they never ask.

Ask at the right moment. Right after a job is done well or a customer leaves happy. A day later it takes effort. In the moment, it takes ten seconds.

Make it effortless. Send your direct review link on WhatsApp. Print a QR code that opens your review page and keep it at the counter or on your invoice. You can make one free with our QR code generator.

Ask everyone. Google’s policies discourage selectively asking only the customers you expect to be happy, so make asking a normal part of every sale.

Never buy reviews, and never offer a discount or gift in return for one. Both break Google’s rules. Fake reviews get removed, and a listing caught with them can be restricted or suspended. It is not worth risking the whole listing.

Reply to every review, including the bad ones. A calm, specific reply to a complaint does more for the next customer’s trust than a page of five star ratings, because it shows what happens when something goes wrong. Reviews written in Marathi are just as valuable, and replying in the same language is a nice touch.

Step 9: Make Sure the Internet Agrees About You

Google checks whether the rest of the web confirms your details. If Justdial says one phone number, IndiaMART says another, your Facebook page shows an address from before you moved, and your visiting card has a third number, Google becomes less confident about which is correct.

Go through every place your business appears online, including Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, your Facebook and Instagram pages, and any trade association or APMC directory listings, and make your business name, address and phone number match your Google listing exactly. Same spelling, same format, same number.

This is dull work. It is also one of the reasons some businesses outrank others that look just as good on paper.

Step 10: Put a Real Website Behind the Listing

You can rank on Maps without a website. For a small walk in shop in a town like Akot or Paratwada, the listing honestly matters more than the site, and that is what we tell people.

But a website strengthens the listing in several ways. It gives Google more evidence of what you do and where. It lets you add local business schema markup, a small piece of code that states your name, address, hours and category in a form search engines read directly. And it lets you build pages for the towns and areas you serve, so a customer searching in Pusad or Kamptee finds a page that speaks to them.

It matters most for businesses whose buyers are not local. A cotton ginning unit in Yavatmal, a dal mill in Akola or an exporter in Nagpur is being searched for by mills and traders who have never visited. For them the Maps listing gets the first look, and the website is what closes the enquiry.

When we build websites for businesses across Vidarbha, Google Business Profile setup, consistent contact details, schema markup and location pages are part of the job rather than extras. For the smallest businesses, a fast single page site with a properly set up Google listing and a WhatsApp enquiry button is often the right place to start. You can see how this works for Amravati, Nagpur, Akola, Yavatmal, Wardha, Akot and Paratwada.

Step 11: Keep the Listing Alive

A Google listing is not something you set up once and forget.

Post an update when you have new stock, a festival offer, a new batch starting or a new service. Add fresh photos. Update your hours before holidays. Reply to reviews within a day or two. Answer your phone.

Then once a month, open the performance section of your profile. It shows how many people called you, asked for directions, clicked through to your website, and which search terms found you. Those search terms are gold. They tell you, in your customers’ own words, what they are looking for when they find you.

What This Looks Like for Different Vidarbha Businesses

Coaching classes and schools. Around the university and Rahatgaon in Amravati, or across Nagpur and Akola, parents compare institutes on their phones in a single evening. Post your results as photos, keep batch timings current through updates, and ask parents and students for reviews after results are declared.

Hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres. Patients check reviews, directions and timings before they come. Keep OPD hours exact, list your departments and tests as services, and make sure the pin leads to the right entrance, especially in larger campuses.

Cotton traders, ginning units and dal mills. In Akola, Yavatmal and Akot, many of your buyers are outside the town. Photograph the plant, the stock and the loading area, describe grades and capacity clearly, and put a proper website behind the listing.

Retail shops and showrooms. Walk in customers decide between you and the shop across the road on their phone. Storefront photos, accurate hours and a steady flow of reviews do most of the work.

Hotels, resorts and tour operators. Visitors heading to Chikhaldara and Melghat through Paratwada rely almost entirely on Maps. They have never been here, so photos of rooms and the approach road, accurate directions and recent reviews decide where they stay.

Logistics, transport and contractors. Around MIHAN and Butibori in Nagpur or along the Wardha corridor, you are usually a service area business. List the areas you truly cover and make sure the phone is answered.

Mistakes That Get Listings Buried or Suspended

  • Stuffing keywords or town names into the business name. The fastest route to suspension.
  • Using an address you do not operate from. A friend’s shop, a virtual office or a post box is not allowed.
  • Creating more than one listing for the same business. It splits everything and can take both down.
  • Buying reviews or trading discounts for them.
  • Leaving the pin in the wrong place. Customers get lost, then leave angry reviews.
  • Wrong or unanswered phone numbers.
  • Letting the listing go silent for a year.
  • Different details on Justdial, IndiaMART and Facebook than on Google.

How Long It Takes

Verification can be done in minutes or can take several days, depending on the method Google gives you. Once verified, a complete listing starts appearing in searches fairly quickly.

Climbing into the top three takes longer, usually weeks to a few months, depending on how many competitors are doing this properly. In Nagpur, for competitive searches like hospitals or coaching, it takes real consistency. In smaller towns like Akot, Paratwada or Wardha, where few businesses have done the work, the climb is often much faster. That gap will not stay open forever.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating, verifying and managing your profile costs nothing. You may choose to spend on photography, a website or paid ads, but the listing itself is free.

Do I need a website to appear on Google Maps?

No. You can appear on Maps with a verified profile alone. A website strengthens your listing and matters most when your buyers are outside your town, but for a small walk in shop, a well set up listing is the best place to start.

Can I list a business I run from home?

Yes. Set it up as a service area business, hide your home address and list the areas you serve. Customers will see where you work, not where you live.

Why was my Google listing suspended?

The most common reasons are extra keywords in the business name, an address you do not really operate from, duplicate listings, or suspicious review activity. Fix the cause first, then request reinstatement through Google.

Can I show up in nearby towns as well?

Partly. Distance is a real factor, so a shop in Amravati will not easily appear for someone searching in Warud. Service area settings help service businesses, and a website with a page for each town you serve helps both kinds of business reach people searching there.

How do I get more reviews quickly?

Ask every customer at the moment they are happy, send the direct review link on WhatsApp, and keep a review QR code at the counter. Do it consistently for three months and the difference is usually obvious.
